The Carice Singers, conductor George Parris
Twelve soloistic voices of The Carice Singers, under their conductor George Parris, presented a beautifully conceived garland of part-songs by Edward Elgar, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Rebecca Clarke. Sincere and inventive, these songs bring to life a variety of texts with vibrant harmonies, gorgeous melodies and a virtuosic approach to writing for voices which reflect the diversity and dynamism of life at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Carice Singers began their musical life in 2011 by performing this deeply imaginative yet unduly neglected music -- they are even named after Elgar's daughter -- and are committed to promoting it among people of all ages.

Trio Meister Raro: Robert Plane, Rachel Roberts, Tim Horton
The Meister Raro Trio draws its name from Schumann’s ability to witness, nurture, and facilitate the diversity of his genius. Trio Meister Raro was formed in 2022, a natural extension of Rachel Roberts, Robert Plane and Tim Horton’s work together as members of Ensemble 360. Whilst they had already explored works for the mellow combination of clarinet, viola and piano as part of Ensemble 360’s residency in Sheffield, becoming an autonomous ensemble has allowed the trio’s members to delve deeper into a rewarding selection of acknowledged masterpieces and fascinating curiosities. Much of the ensemble’s repertoire focuses on storytelling and fantasy and this narrative element is reflected in their programme for this concert.

Britten Oboe Quartet with Nicholas Daniel
Nicholas Daniel founded the Britten quartet together with his colleagues and co-principals of the award-winning Britten Sinfonia. They aim to bring music of the highest quality to audiences and to explore lesser-known works, both British and from abroad, as well as standard classics such as Mozart’s oboe quartet.
This concert features a flute quartet (played on the oboe) by Mozart, together with a fascinating collection of both well and lesser-known pieces. Highlights include Thea Musgrave’s Cantilena, commissioned in 2008, which is a short lyrical piece where an outsider (the oboe) joins the group (a string trio) and adds to their dialogue along with the Sønderho Bridal Trilogy - a set of three traditional Danish wedding folk tunes dating back hundreds of years, from a tiny village called Sønderho in the western part of Denmark. The concert ends with an arrangement of the achingly beautiful Aria ‘Aus Liebe’ from Bach's Matthew Passion.

With a growing reputation for the courage, vitality and intensity of its performances the Marmen Quartet is fast establishing itself as one of the most impressive and engaging new talents in the chamber music arena. 2019 marked a year of significant achievement for the Quartet, with First Prizes at both the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and Banff International String Quartet Competition, where they were also awarded the Haydn and Canadian Commission prizes.

Worksongs is the latest project from the Maxwell Quartet, exploring the traditional music of their homeland of Scotland. It brings together songs, dances, and stories from times past, borne out of the historic industries that Scotland is renowned for. Travelling from the East of Scotland’s fishing and sea trades, to the Jute Mills of Dundee in Central Scotland, and the Hebridean traditions of Tweed and Woolmaking, the programme is a historic tour of Scotland’s hardworking societies, woven together in the Maxwell Quartet’s own impressionistic and sensitive reworkings of traditional songs.

Katona Twins, Guitar duo “From Bach to Beatles” This programme contains some wonderful and sophisticated works by Bach, but also a couple of funky arrangements of some Beatle tunes. There will be plenty of drama and Spanish flair, and a couple of pieces by the King of gypsy jazz: Django Reinhardt.
